Microwave ovens with grills

We're looking at buying a new freestanding microwave and thought one with a grill would be a good idea. Never had one with a grill before and finding it hard to find reliable info about how much clearance is needed above the microwave - and possibly around it, too?
Help much appreciated from anyone who has one (and hopefully the instruction book which came with it and gives definitive guidance!).

Last time I used the grill function in my microwave, a lot of smoke come out. i don't know what's wrong, so I stop using it. May be it is just my microwave.
Have you not got a standard oven? If not, you may want to consider halogen oven instead?0 -
We have one but it gets very hot with the grill function on, They do come with a metal contraption for use with the grill that lifts whatever you are grilling to the correct height. I've never used it though, who knew you could put metal in the microwave?#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Thanks for your replies, but they don't actually answer the question! It would be really helpful to know the amount of clearance required to use the grill function on a microwave.0

If you pick a microwave from Argos, you can 'ask them a question' and hopefully receive a response from another purchaser or argos themselves.
Other sites such as Currys may have live chat.
I have one with a grill. It sits on top of the freezer with nothing covering the air vents on top. Not sure there is a specific clearance required, perhaps its a commonsense thing? Obviously you need air flow all the way around even if you're just microwaving. Metal in microwave when using the grill function is perfectly safe. Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

We have a Panasonic with a grill function which is sited under kitchen wall cabinets. The manual gives minimum recommended measurements of 15cm clearance above, 5cm on one side and 'free' on the second side (where the air vents are), with 10cm between the back of the microwave and the wall.0

I have a Panasonic with grill and conventional oven (bought as it was only £10 more than a basic microwave), but when I tried the grill, I too got lots of smoke and it put me off using it again.
Some time later, I found the handbook, which warned that both grill and conventional oven parts cause smoke, when first used, as they are burning off manufacturers' grease.
I still have not dared use the grill or regular oven (and am waiting for my husband to find a customer who will test it for me).
I had considered buying a new model, when needing to use some Tesco vouchers, but as has been said, they are quite cheap looking compared with those of 4-5 years ago. (The stainless steel is obviously thinner , the casing less robust and there are fewer shelving options).0
