train fare to edinburgh

Options
Hi,

Im planning to travel up to edinburgh from leeds on 4th november.
an advance single from leeds is £80, however if travel to preston its £11 and from there £26 for another ticket to edinburgh costing me £37. How can this make sense?

Why do you think rail pricing makes sense? It very clearly doesn't, you just need to be aware of that and play the system to your advantage, such as using split ticketing as you have found.

The journey time is quite different. 3 hours direct, and 4h30m or thereabouts via Preston (changing trains in Manchester). But if cost matters more than time, then you have found a cheap deal. Go for it!

Or to keep on the direct route you could split the ticket at Durham and pay £49.60 based on the 9.08 departure from Leeds. (Presumably that was the one you wanted because that's the one with the £80 non-split fare.)

On the 10.08 the fare without splitting is £48.80 and can't be bettered. You would actually get there well before the time you would have if you caught the 9.09 to Manchester to go via Preston!

Train fares really don't make sense!

Much cheaper fares from Leeds are available on different services. Its also direct taking 3 rather than 5 hours.

    thanks for the responses folks!

I had a look again, if i take a train after 10.30am from leeds to newcastle, then wait 30mins or so at the station and get train up to edinburgh i can get the fare to £37 approx. think i will do this.

I normally find that splitting at Berwick works the best
