Put my wife's name on one of my accounts - now she has been refused a loan

OK, so just to set the scene; I've had a pretty chequered credit history with defaults and missed payments all over the place. However, in the past 6 years or so the defaults have fallen off my credit file and I'm just left with the odd missed payment/going over limit which has meant my credit file is improving, but not great.
I got married this year, and in order to pay in a cheque that was made out jointly to myself and my wife we got her name added on to my current account, making it a joint account, purely so we could pay in the cheque. The plan was to remove her name pretty soon after, but it's now 2 months on and she's still on there.
My wife has perfect credit history - she gets accepted for anything and everything, so when she applied for a 15k loan the other day with Sainsburys (who she's had a loan with before), we were surprised that she's actually been rejected.
Now I assume this is because she is now 'financially linked' with me and I've brought her down to my level in terms of credit!
I'm just wondering, if I remove her from my current account (as originally planned) will it cut the financial ties between me and her and make it look better on her part? Or are we forever linked and going to struggle with credit?
I'm kicking myself now, she's never had a problem with getting credit until now.
Any advice much appreciated.

Close the joint account and file a notice of disassociation with all the CRAs where it appears.0
