    Sounds sensible.

A Maryland has a metal wing that sticks to the back of the supporting tooth. If there isn't 1-2mm clearance, then there is no room for that wing, and if it's only temporary (until you get the implant) you obviously don't want this much shaved of an otherwise healthy tooth.

The implant will only fit the space of the missing tooth, so can be made for the room available, and doesn't need support from a neighbouring tooth.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • The dentist said it's because my bottom front teeth are overcrowded so one of the bottom incisors is further forward making it touch my front top tooth. He said the implant should be fine but I may need abit of shaving off that bottom incisor to help my bite.

The other option was to have a brace to straighten the bottom teeth and then a normal or maryland bridge. (said no)

One thing he didn't do was take xrays. Would he normally wait until after the extraction and healing before xrays? I did have an attempted root canal there so he might of used them from my file. I forgot to ask him... Tut

Yes - the X-ray will only really be important once the tooth has healed - to see the bone he has to put the implant into.

It's often considered 'best practice' to take a small x-ray of any tooth you're going to extract - but again, this might be done only once you've committed to the treatment. It could even be done on the day of the extraction, or, in order to keep radiation doses as low as possible - there might be any number of reasons why the dentist feels that not taking an x-ray is better'best practice' than taking one!!! :D

  • So I am waiting for a finalised treatment plan to be sent in the post. If it's within the rough price quoted I will go ahead. The extraction is the scary part. Especially being a front tooth!!

There's nothing to that. The idea as well is that bone preservation is key - so it will be a really gentle extraction - no ripping tugging & pulling! The flip side of that is that it might seem to go on a little longer than you might be expecting - but nothing excessive!

  • Just one more question if I may,

Does shaving down a bottom tooth to make room for the implant sound correct?

Fine. Teeth can take a mm or two adjustment with no real problem. That's all he'll be talking about.

  • So i have received my treatment plan and the price now stands at £5230. Now i know front teeth are important but this seems high! Higher than I expected seeing as I was given a rough price of £4000 which was my upper limit. Grr

I have been following these threads with great interest. I have a rear tooth which is slowly disintergrating even after some filling repair. I really need that tooth as I had a clasp around it to support the upper denture I have. My dentist said it needs extraction, but then I have no post to support the clasp. Is an implant possible and will it be suitable to have a clasp around it?

You need to ask a dentist who can see you, your x rays, the amount of bone around the tooth, the position of your sinuses , your general and oral health and can make an assessment based on this information.
