Which vinegar do you use to make pickles and chutney?

Hi all,

Just wondering is someone can let me know the answer to this one. My local supermarkets have stopped selling white distilled vinegar and now only sell pickling vinegar, so I'm hoping they're one and the same thing. I think maybe the "pickling" sort is white with added spices ... would this be OK for spot cleaning carpets, etc.?

  • You are right, if you can get rid of the spices by straining them then you are left with just the plain white vinegar

    Help!!

    I've got loads of cooking apples today and want to make apple chutney with them .... the recipe I have calls for malt vinegar which I don't have, I do have loads of white vinegar though .... can I use this in it's place or do I need to get some malt vinegar??

    Just made some damson wine, now to make apple chutney ... feeling quite productive this afternoon :)

    i also have LOTS of malt pickling vinegar

    my question is, can i use it for the chutney or not, or should i buy some 'normal' malt vinegar

  • Yes, use it. It may alter the flavour slightly but it certainly won't make the recipe fail.
  • You might want to tone down the spices you add to the chutney as the pickling vinegar already includes some - especially pepper. Check the label to see what's included in the pickling vinegar and adjust the chutney recipe, accordingly.

  • Hi all,

    I was wondering if someone could help.

    I have a receipe for chutney and it just says spiced vinegar....does that mean pickling spice vinegar or make your own spiced vinegar with distelled malt?...or does it mean something else?

    I do have some pickling spice vinegar leftover so I would like to use this if I could.

    The chutney is cranberry, apple, and date and also has chilli flakes, cumin, coriander, cinnamon already in it.

    Your help would be really appreciated as i wanted to make a batch this morning.

    you can make your own spiced vinegar by bring to the boil pickling spices in malt vinegar and then leaving to stand till cool strain ready for use.
    I am away to look up for you the amounts, I use cheap malt vinegar and pickling spice mix bought in sackets. This way you can adjust the spice to taste as well as save money.
