You guys are all great. I've been super down about this recently and you've all really helped me today. I will have a conversation with my dad. I'm trying to do best by everyone but hadn't even stopped to consider that maybe I've been blinded to the fact that I'm being overcharged by my own dad. I'm not always that quick on the uptake.

Obviously I don't know which part of Derbyshire you live in but at a quick glance on right move you can rent a 2 bed semi for around £500 per month or less in Derby area. You will have bills on top but nowhere near what you are paying to live with your parents.

  • sorry I have to agree with the general consensus. We spend all in £1100 pm on our outgoings - this includes all bills, mortgage and food. I'll grant you I'm pretty nija at being frugal! But it seems like your parents must not have to pay a penny to service their expenses. Unless you speak to them and deal with this you'll never get out of debt or into your own flat. Ask them if you can have a month free (buy your own food for a month) and use that money for a deposit & rent in advance

I'm in shock that anyone's parents would charge that much. Unless perhaps they aren't fully aware of your situation? I bet if you showed your dad the full amount of debt etc he would probably be shocked but more likely to reduce your rent. £1000 should be £500!

As a parent, I'm quite shocked at what you are paying your parents. Is there any possibility they are actually saving the money for you, excess of what it is actually costing for you to stay there?

If that is the case then it would help you to know that. If they are actually keeping your £1500 less actual costs for themselves, then they should be ashamed of themselves.

Everybody's circumstances are different, but on the face of it, as others have said, you could live for less than £1500 per month on your own. I'm sure it's very difficult for both sides, no matter how hard you try to get along.

A full and frank discussion with your dad is needed double quick. Please report back a.s.a.p. You also sound like you're making a good job of being a dad your daughter can be proud if.

Agree with everyone else that £1,500 is a hell of a lot of money - I'm sure you could rent somewhere much cheaper (bills included) and then at least you could make financial choices to suit - i.e. have a week of just eating baked potatoes with different fillings to cut the grocery bill etc! (Just an off the top thought, but you get the drift).

You should be payingabout £500 rent for a house of YOUR OWN. Not £1000 to live in the same house as your parents?? £1000 would get you a nice house OF YOUR OWN in London. Move out or agree a rent of about £250 - in fact parents should probably help more. Mine would allow me to stay for free (with a little money for food / lodge etc.)

In perspective, £1000 pcm is a mortgage payment of a house worth around £300,000. Unless your dad's house is worth this, why are you paying the whole thing?? If you are going halves, the house needs to be worth about £600,000. £500 for food as well?? I reckon your parents are clearing £1000 profit per month from you.
