How to find a good hairdresser??

The last few times I've visited my usual hairdressers and on the odd occassion Supercuts, I haven't been very happy with the result.
I need tips/advice on how to find a decent hairdresser. I have fine shortish straight hair which I'm trying to grow, but I like to keep it styled whilst it's growing.
Any help would be appreciated

I think the only way to find a good hairdresser is personal recommendation. do you have any friends or work colleagues whose hair looks good and could recommend someone?
Failing that, keep an eye out for people's hair when out shopping etc, and if you think their hair looks well cut, tell them and ask who cuts it!0 -
I think the best way to find a good hairstylist is by word of mouth! Ask your friends whoms hairstyles you like. If you see someone and you think 'i love her hair' go and ask them where they had their hair done. It will be a compliment to them aswell!!! Best of luck!! By the way I'm a hairstylist!!!!!!!!!!:pSunday 23rd September 2007 I came to my senses and discovered fresh air!!:j

It's not often I see a good style, but when I have, I never dared ask em who cut it. Gonna have to in the future tho'0

My definition of a good hairdresser is one who sits you down and discusses what you want before your hair is washed. It makes me so mad when they whisk you away for the junior to wash your hair without looking at your hair type etc:mad: How the hell can they see what it's like when it's all dripping wet???
The hairdresser I go to at the moment, even though she knows me now as a regular, always asks me first, 'what are we doing today?' before the wash. That is what I personally look for in a good hairdresser:j:beer: My glass is half full :beer:0 -
I would say it's much like finding a good dentist, and would agree that recommendation is the best way to go.
You could also look for qualifications. There is the basic City & Guilds, but there are also advanced couses examinations they can go on.
(My sister is a very well qualified hairdresser - City & Guilds tutor, but that's no help to anyone, as she's in Australia!!)
How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
I agree the best way to find a good hairdresser is by recommendation you could always have a free consultation to get an idea of who you are going to trust and if you think you have found someone then just book in for a trim it will give you an idea if you can trust them especially not to cut too much off and to listen to you:heart2: Proud mummy to Ryan born 14.2.09 :heart2:0

Do bear in mind though, that you can't admire someone's hair and give all credit to their hairdresser, it depends how good the person is at styling their own hair.
I have a really good hairdresser and hair looks great for a day afterwards. A few more days of me trying to style it and I would be avoiding my hairdresser if a saw her in the street. OK the cut is good, but so much depends on your own skill.0 -

Finding a good hairdresser is hard work! Why is it though when you finally find someone who understands your hair and cuts it well do they up and leave?!
I always give a new hairdresser 2 haircuts or so to understand my hair. My hair is very thick and needs a very good cut to make the most of it. I will always tell the hairdresser that it is very difficult hair but only if they don't tell me first....that way I know they know their way round hair well enough. It gives me confidence in them. I have recently had my haircut by a new lady and after giving it a week or two to settle down I am really happy with the cut.
She will be seeing me again! By the way, I go to Toni and Guy. My reasoning is that I have been to so many hairdressers and had so many bad haircuts that I decided they may be more expensive but I do know I will get a good cut. After 6 years of going to them I have not been disappointed! My second favorite household chore is ironing. Yes, been thinking about going to Toni & Guy. However, there isn't a salon in my town, I'd have to travel to the nearest city.
Any idea how much they charge? Do you just telephone and ask to make an appointment or should I ask for someone who specializes in staright fine hair?
My ideal future style is long and feathered. It's short at the moment and a bit feathered I suppose, but I wanna keep a style cut in whilst it's growing if you get what I mean. I'm starting uni soon, so want a style that's easy to maintain.
I agree it's not just the cut, it's how good you sre personally in styling. Unfortunatly I'm not brilliant, but i do try0
