Cashing a cheque with my nickname

Options
A cheque has been addressed to me for the amount of £400. I need to cash it in to either my Halifax or Natwest account. Trouble is, my official name is Camilla and the cheque has been addressed to Milly. My legal surname is in there.

How likely is it that the cashier would accept it? I'm not sure how obvious it is to people that Milly is related to Camilla, as I think it might depend on the cashier and how much they strictly adhere to the the rules...

    Try it and see.

Can the 1 who wrote the cheque not write another ?

Use one of the automated machines if you can. They never question the payee or date.

  • It may depend on the cashier - strictly they are within their right to reject it.
Do you have any supporting evidence to show you are known as Milly?

From their point of view there could be a Milly... who is waiting for a £400 cheque.

A hand full of years ago my wife to be picked up my cheque book by mistake (we banked at the same institute) and made a cheque out and even signed it.

It cashed no problems to my confusion when I checked my statement!

I would take it to the counter and ask the cashier to check with management, this is common, not with Milly, but with Tony, and Kate, for example and they have been processed.

So as others said it up to the cashier to check the name and the date and the words and figures, so it will not be returned if gets cashed via the bank, it only returns to you if there is a funding issue.

I would accept the cheque if it was presented to me and I could see the relation to Milly and Camilla.

This is incorrect, yes they are checked after you have used the machine and are rejected by the cashier or the one authorising the cheques, so they can be returned to you.

As suggested to save it being rejected by the cashier after you have used the machine go to the counter instead and they can authorise the cheque on reverse and decide if the cheque can be paid in.

Just letting you know its not automatic the machine, what if you put in a cheque for £2000, and it was read as £20 would you then expect the machine not to be second checked? and amend the figure, or do you think the machine will credit your account with £2000 when it was a £20 cheque and it just goes through?

No its checked before it it emptied.

It's the banks discretion if they accept it or not.

If they refuse it then you will need to ask whoever has written the cheque to amend it or write a new one.

It does get checked via the automated deposit machine, and again it is the banks discretion if they accept it or not. Paying in at the automated machine would only cause more delays to you should they refuse it as the bank will return it to you via the post.

All you can do is ask if the bank are happy to accept it.
  • Thanks - yep, I was thinking ask with management if it gets refused by the cashier. I'll give it a go. I have a gym pass with Milly on it, which MAY work in my favour...

    Thanks everyone, fingers crossed!

With Halifax, the machine reads the cheque and asks you to confirm the amounts match those it has 'read'. It's quite clever really. I used the machine to bank a cheque where the cashier wouldn't accept the date (cant remember the problem now) but it went through ok. Worth a punt.

Just explain to the cashier that 'Milly' is a diminutive of Camilla.

It's not a nickname; that would be something like 'Shorty' or 'Ringo'.
