Can't access memory stick...says it needs formatting

Please can anyone help. When I put my use stick in a PC I get a message saying the disk is not formatted...I really need to get stuff off it!!

I tried following an online suggested solution by clicking on run, typing cmd and then typing [Chkdsk F: /r] but I get a message saying chkdsk is not recognised as an internal or external command.

    Don't reformat it.

If it is not recognised on 2+ machines, I would install some recovery software like Recuva and have it search the memory stick for files.

Just download Recuva but can't figure out how to use it!

As its most basic, select the drive you want to search (ie plug the stick in, run Recuva, and it should appear in the drop down list - it might not be under the original name you gave the stick)

    Click options

Actions > Scan for non-deleted files (for recovery from damaged or reformatted disks)

    Press 'OK'

    Press 'Scan'

Selecting 'Deep scan' and 'Show files found in hidden system directories' on that options screen might be worth selecting if you need to run the search a second time.

Did you originally use it on a Mac? Possibly just the wrong filesystem.
