It's as easy to buy a house now as it ever was!

You want to become a home owner?

You need to save, you need to buy a house you can afford.

That's always been the way.

The problem is today there are more pressures on your hard earned money that you need to curb. Do that and you are half way there.

What are these pressures? Well that's easy, mobile phone contract, Netflix, Sky, Amazon prime, new car lease, gym membership, Internet, to name but a few. This could be a monthly amount easily in excess of £300

Next FTBs all want a new house in a nice area, near to work filled with all new furniture, carpets, etc. Then there are holidays to save for.

Well obviously that's incredibly hard and expensive. And probably unlikely to happen.

Well back in the 1970's when I was an FTB, I couldn't buy a new house, definitely not anywhere near my parents, far too expensive.

I had to move miles away, buy a tiny house, buy 3nd hand furniture or hand me downs. At the end of each month I had no money left over, had a black and white tele, parents had colour.

And don't forget interest rates peaked at 17% in the 80's.

Buying a new car was just pure fantasy.

How much was one paid in the 70's. Well as a graduate engineer I took home about £50 a week. And only the top 3% went to uni, now everyone goes. Don't tell me the population has suddenly got a whole more intelligent in the last 40 years!

So kids, you've never had it so easy, you've never been so smart, so stop moaning and get on with it.

Cheers fj

I was expecting one of your usual threads when i saw the title, but you know what ? I almost agree with you.
When i was a FTB i got one of the cheapest rundown terraced houses i could find and furnished it with other people castoffs.

Yeah and when you were a lad you were given one lump of coal and that had to keep you entertained, fed and watered for the whole week right?

Jesus, is there anything more patronising than being preached at by some baby boomer home owner? Your generation was the first to know no real hardship, don't pretend like you've been through hell and deserve respect, you haven't. You're just a bunch of wage slaves who lucked out buying homes when they were cheap and have got wealthy on the back of stealing from your kids.

The fact is that house prices relative to salaries are much, much more expensive now than they were 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 years ago and that doesn't even take into account that most houses are now shoeboxes barely fit for habitation.

Not looking for sympathy, it would just be nice if occasionally the lucky generation weren't always so sanctimonious about how they've become wealthy when evidently most of it comes from taking in one way or another from their children's generation. Just admit you've done well as a generation at taking everything you can get your hands on for yourselves and leaving nothing for anyone else and we can all be friends.

Compared to 40 years ago they are not as much more expensive as you see to think.

Saying that in London and the south east agree I agree it's more difficult to buy that it it has ever been.

When I left school at 15, the options were the iron foundry or down a mine. I chose the foundry, how many kids of today would choose to work in such an environment. I would have applied for a council house when I left home at 19, but there was no chance of me getting pregnant.

I refuse to believe that someone in the top 3% intelligence bracket in a maths subject does not understand inflation. I can therefore reasonably conclude that these are in fact the words of third rate WUM.
