I live in London (North west), and find food prices to be about the same. However if you want to shop in the 'discount' places like Home Bargains or Pound shops then you may need to travel further out (I don't think Home Bargains has reached London, but poundland has!).

Also depends on the supermarkets nearby as well. Like you said Richmond has Waitrose and that can be quite expensive even with their basic range. I like to go to my local one sometimes for a treat, but I just shop at my nearby Tesco or Sainsburys! Aldi and Lidl are in London but there's not many of them.

I hardly use my local shops for food as the fruit and veg doesn't look great (in my area anyway) and it's a mostly Jewish area, so can't exactly get bacon or pork in any butchers nearby!

I used to work in Richmond it had plenty of gourmet delis and the like but nowhere outstandingly good value for food shopping. I used to shop after work but drove home first as I had wider and cheaper options. That said Kingston is only up the road and on a bus route, as well as all the supermarkets has a great market.

No offense to the OP or the daughter, but I'm having difficulty reconciling someone who has a masters degree with someone whose mother/father is involved in planning her budget down to where to get groceries.

What you can find is that different size stores of the same chain will have different prices. Large supermarkets tend to be cheaper than the express stores so be wary of that.

Home Bargains apparently have a couple of stores in London. Though not near Kew or Richmond. (as an aside please make sure she clarifies Richmond upon Thames when searching for information otherwise it may throw up information on Richmond Yorkshire!)

If she can get to a farmers' market can help save money http://www.totallyrichmond.co.uk/farmersmarket.html

Apparently there is an Iceland store in Twickenham and they do home deliveries. She could also sign up for deliveries from Tesco/Asda or Sainsbury's- obviously wouldn't be able to get the reduced price end of life items. Though depending on transport can be a lot easier- also no eye level temptation.

Aldi and Lidl stores don't seem to be as convenient there.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

She won't find the cheaper supermarkets in Kew or Richmond. Kew has a M & S and Richmond has Tesco, Sainsburys and Waitrose - also a Whole Foods Market (it's that kind of place). I'm surprised she thinks Richmond is 'cheaper' than Kew; there can't be too much in it and they're both pretty expensive. She can find more reasonably priced areas from which she can easily commute to her work in Kew.
