Perhaps consideration should be given to staggering mealtimes so that someone who hasn't eaten it is available to drive affected persons to a&e? Lol.

Thank you to everyone for your posts, I have opened the packaging, washed, left and checked it again and it looks/smells absolutely fine so am going to risk it..........if I don't come back on here and post again it means it wasn't good to eat and I have killed us all !! :rotfl:

Can I have your stereo:rotfl: then?
  • So sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I thought it appropriate given that only last week I was told by my great-gran not to throw out her chocolates that had a use by two years ago that "we didn't have them dates in my day and I'm still alive"!

I just found a gift set we have had that has been looking nice on our worktop of chilli oil and rosemary infused vinegar which have use bys of July 2011. Are these still safe to use? x
  • I would guess so. Are they 'use by' or 'best before'?
Best before I would definitely use...

When I was young there was no sutch things as use by or best before dates, if it looked and smelled O K.
    Then eat it.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Clostridium is always a risk with chilli, garlic or herb-infused oil. Is the bottle filled to the top, or is there a gap between the oil meniscus and lid? (That will create an aerobic environment, which does not support the growth of C Diff).

The vinegar should be okay (test with a small piece of bread) but I would recommend ditching the oil, it's just too risky. (I often use "out of date" cooking and salad oils btw).

I wouldn't risk it to be honest.

With the greatest of respect, I know that years ago there wasn't any use by dates, but there wasn't so much food meant to last for months on end either. :)

Use by dates should be respected....the food won't go off one minute after midninght but they're not there just to be annoying. Best before dates on the other hand are a bit of a waste of printing ink. I'd be very wary of the chilli oil tbh, given the well proven risk of nasties in improperly bottles oil+ vegetable matter, but a box of Best Before chocs is only likely to taste a bit stale.

Heated both through thoroughly, they were delicious :)
