Defaults on Credit Report

Options
I got myself when I was young with credit cards and car payments. I have been unable to get credit in past few years due to this and noticed my credit rating got worse every time I tried. I read that defaults drop off credit rating after 6 years if this is the case mine will all be clear by 2/17, does this mean they are no longer visable to lenders as I am looking mortgage. Your help is much appreciated.
