Debt collection/ Faulty item

Hello
Can anyone advise on what happens when an electrical item is ordered from a catalogue and then the outstanding debt is sold on?
It's for a dishwasher that is less than a year old that has decided to stop working and the catalogue company sold on the debt as it wasn't being paid to their required amount each month. They have now advised that they will not advise on the faulty item until the debt has been paid.
Is this correct?
