So I used about 1200g of rhubarb last night to make jam. It's currently in a pyrex jug in the fridge, what do I do with it? I can't "can" it as I don't have the suitable stuff and don't think it would be very money saving to go and buy the necessary stuff.
My mum was pulling up the last crop of Rhubarb for this year and gosh this jam tastes so good but I can't eat it all in a week....my teeth would rot:eek:

I agree buying new jam jars is costly, but asda 454g smartprice strawberry jam is 29p a jar.
Morrisons savers strawberry jam 450g is 28p a jar.
Sainsbury's Strawberry Jam Basics 454g is 30p a jar.
Tesco Everyday Value Strawberry Jam 454G is 29p a jar.
Batch bake jam tarts, & refill the jars with the good stuff? You may never be able to look cheap strawberry jam in the eye again but I leave it to you to decide if that is such a bad thing.0 -
You can freeze jam in small containers, so no need to can it or eat it all this week. I know you're disappointed0

Trot round friends and family and see if any have some empty jam jars they would be prepared to part with. Most of my stash came from a fellow Mensan who hoards the darned things.:D
ETA: Are you by any chance in Milton Keynes? I could spare some.If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
The simplest way is to put the jam into a clean mug or tumbler, not full.
Microwave until hot but not spurting out. Cover with either cling film or waxed paper from an empty cereal packet. Put an elastic band over the paper/cling film. Cool. When cold keep it in the fridge. It is most unlikely to go mouldy for several months unopened.0 -
You are all amazing! I have jars around the place, like Ragu Jars etc but the interweb says not to use those...But I thought, if I sterilised them and heated the jam up then put the lid on, wouldn't it cause a vacuum and that would be safe?
Unfortunately not in Milton Keynes but thank you anyway!

I've always reused jam jars, and any other sort of jar if whatever was in it previously didn't make the lid smell. I wash them thoroughly, rinse in boiling water and then bake in the oven whilst I'm making the jam; then I can pour the jam straight into them, add a little circle of greaseproof paper to the top and whack the lid on. The safety button tends to pop down whilst they cool. They're good outside the fridge for awhile, but I haven't yet made enough in one go to really test how long it keeps. That's how mom does it though.0
