Good, strong tights

Options
Seeing as the temperature has dropped a tad I'm looking forward and thinking about tights shopping.

My problem is holes at the toes (yes I've ensured my toenails are super short, almost non-existent) and whilst I know you can put a pair of socks over them, it's irritating to have to do that and makes boots a bit uncomfortably tight when you've got socks and tights.

Therefore, can anyone recommend any tights (40 dernier preferably) that aren't prone to laddering but most most importantly won't go through at the toe at the first or second wear. I feel like I'm constantly just throwing £2 in the bin (or however much Primark tights cost) any time and I avoid wearing skirts/dresses because of this.

Happy to spend more if I'll get ones which don't go through and that don't bobble up after they've been in the laundry.

Thanks

  • I like m&s's black tights - they do 60 or sometimes 80 denier I think? £8 for three pairs. They're not always exactly the same though, when I buy them. I reckon they probably change suppliers every so often.

Instead of standard socks, try wearing footsie tights or shoe liners.
Look for tights with a bit of Lycra which makes them a bit more durable.
Try the freezing trick. Look it up on Google.

Have you tried putting your tights on whilst wearing gloves? It may not be your feet that are the problem, but rough skin on your hands or snagging nails.

Moisturise your feet well with foot lotion before putting on tights to minimise snagging. Let your feet breathe for a minute before putting on shoes.

Do particular pairs of shoes or boots cause the problem?

Have you tried more expensive pairs? I found really cheap tights ripped and had an awful feel. Better quality tights definitely lasted longer and were much nicer to wear.

Stockings: you can replace one at a time, rather than binning a whole pair.

Washing tights: always in a wash bag on a delicates wash.
Don't put your tights and bra in the same bag! The hooks on the bra will snag the tights.
    Alternatively, hand wash.
Normal temperature general wash will quickly degrade your tights.

P.S. Get a size bigger than you think you need. The problem may be because the fabric is straining around your foot.
If you have boots with zips the tights will inevitably rub on the metal and bobble, and may well ladder along the zip.

I generally go for leggings and socks - if they are both black people tend not to notice, if they are wildly different colours it's a feature!

  • I find the Primark 120 denier (theyre £3 a pack) are fab. had mine three years, worn a lot (usually at least twice a week from october through March) and never had a hole in them.

I buy M&S Hold ups which seem to be fine. I also buy knee highs for under trousers from Aldi which again are fine and last ages.

I put the knee highs in a pillow case to wash them in the machine. But the hold ups I put in soak in the sink whilst I have a bath. Its the elastic element that I wouldn't like to risk in the washing machine.

Don't bother with knee highs from Sainsbury's, one wear and the toe has gone!
  • primark size large tights last for years, buy larger size than needed.
tesco value are not great but their normal expensive ones are excellent.
i would highly rate the range in lidl- they are super warm and so long lasting, but they sells out in a few hours. they are the best winter tights at a good price. for the best thick tights that last years- hundreds of washes and still look new buy heat holders, the ones with tog rating. they have survived dryers and washing machines!

If you've got an Asda near you the 'Golden Lady' tights seem to be practically indestructible. They're about £1.50 a pair but I get quite a few washes and wears from each pair.
  • I second the M&S tights - I buy mine from the outlet near my parents and have never had an issue with them. No holes in the toe, no bobbling like the Tesco and Primark ones I've bought in the past and they're very comfortable.
