Debt collection chasing me for NI

Options
Just had a letter saying our records show you have not paid class 2 ni contributions

They are going to send a debt collection agency.

Well I've not been working last few years, I did tell them.

What should I do now?

Is it compulsory to pay even if your not working?

  • If you are not working, then you don't have to pay NI.

However, you will find that when you come to retire, you won't be able to get a pension.

How are you living if you're not earning?

Is this a genuine letter from HMRC ?

Simply ring and advise them your not currently working, and to update there records.
If your not earning, are you claiming any benefits ?

    Hi AG47

I take it that you are - or at least were - self-employed for a time, as class 2 NICs only apply to this category of worker. Your requirement to pay them can be waived if your weekly income falls below a certain threshold. Did you ever formally de-register as self-employed?

On a general note, it is worth maintaining nominal class 2 contributions as far as possible, as they build up one's entitlement to benefits such as the State Retirement Pension.

I don't think the government will be able to pay anybody by the time I retire
