Reluctant to post comps

  • When I first started posting comps I got a bit disgruntled by some of the replies when you make a mistake, you get over it though and as with everything with a bit of practice you get the hang of it, you learn what to search for to see if a comp has already been posted etc.

When you see that "Thanks Annieg" post in the "I won" forum it kinda makes it all worthwhile.

You might occasionally get the "This is a DUPE" reply to one of your comp posts and although it sounds a bit blunt or unfriendly, in most cases it probably isn't. It's important to spot and tag dupe posts so that we can get them merged as a lot of comps only allow 1 entry so entering twice via 2 different threads might invalidate all of your entries.

Keep slogging on and thanks for posting.

If it is a dupe then it's a simple statement of fact about the post not a comment on the poster, no matter what search terms are used search doesn't always pick things up and I assume most dupes are spotted because someone remembers the original not because they are checking each new post for duplicates.

Correct, however, the regimented posting style of a particular poster that picks up on loads of dupes etc would make me (if I was a newbie and made a mistake) think twice about posting.

Maybe best to leave them for peeps to dupe and disqualify themselves instead, but if I saw it written like Duppppppeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee it may wind me up to. Although I don't think I ever have ?

Edit: Annieg123 I would be interested to know which posts are putting you off posting, would you add one for us to look at?

I wouldn't let it put you off posting though, you never know that one post you put up could be the lucky one you win yourself :)

  • Daphne01- im still sharing comps :) and really enjoying doing so (think ive made one dupe today so not too many mistakes), there wasnt a specific post but more a constant array of negative feedback and i think i just got a little over sensitive. I think its important to remember that even when new people have read the guidance notes they take alot longer to do the post ( not as speedy as the more experienced) and they still won't always realise they arent doing it correctly, if the more experienced posters give some feedback - for example rather than posting a 'clean link' explain to the OP what this means, how to do it and why its preferred. i think its also important to remember that sometimes searches and advanced searches dont show previous posts so with the best intention in the world a dupe will occur.
I think this community is like any other. There are different types of people who express themselves in different ways.
Personally i always try to speak to others properly and with respect and i dont respond well to people who are curt, abrupt or rude. i think as time goes on i will learn how to post more accurately and also who and who not to take notice of :)

Clean links means to strip the url back to take out any personal info or referrer info.

So msecompetitionannieg123 which could give you extra entries or show the company we all copied you would become mseocmpetition.

Sometimes if it comes to your email it can have that in the url header so you obviously don't want everyone knowing your personal info! It could also invalidate your entry if 100's enter from your personal link.

Search I find easiest way to search is to strip the url back so www.telegraphnews.co.uk/toycomp I would search as telegraphnews

That way you can see easily if it has been posted, though it takes approx 10 mins for search to update so I always check first page before clicking post.

People on the forum, took me years but a thick skin and I see it as each to their own, like a family you didn't choose them like friends but you all muddle along.

Lot of luck, Hope I explained that so you understand it.

Well done you for wanting to share. We have all made mistakes and will continue to do so-me personally it is the best way to learn. I actually prefer someone to send me a private message if I have made a mistake-I will see it quicker than a comment below something I have posted as I do not tend to return to a post I have put on the board. Wishing you lots of fun on this site and many more wins to come it makes your post and emails much more interesting. Good Luck.
