Instead of rank dishonesty, how about you just look up the contact details of your real former employers and store these on your phone or computer so you have them to hand when filling out your application forms. So what if your line manager has left the company, the company itself can still give a reference confirming you worked there. Miles better than getting a job under false pretences and then being sacked a few weeks in when they realise that your cousin or best friend gave you a reference and you've never worked for them!

But it might explain why they are unemployed, lost their last job, and don't have many friends!

I have worked with relatives these are not accepted by most employers as referees. I never lie and never ask anyone to lie for me . Don't be so rude!! Many of my former employers aren't in business any more, the big ones that are WILL NOT give out references under any circumstances others only if pushed, a start-finish date. Others will not as it was via a recruitment agency that I worked for them. The only way I have of getting it's staff I worked alongside is by going via their Company and hopefully they'll do it over the phone.
Agencies only have attendance records their Office Staff don't work alongside you.
I have lost contact with the staff I'd want to give me a reference and the whole world isn't on Facebook which I rarely use anyway as it's crap & cause more damage then good.
Other than your rant have you any advice?

I want work but it strikes me how people with as much drive as a damp cloth get through the interview & reference stage without lying.
