Freezing Cauliflower

I have a cauliflower in my veg box that probably won't get eaten this week...is there any way I can freeze it? perhaps a 'side dish' type of thing that I could cook today and freeze?

I am really trying to avoid waste....Many thanks for any ideas

  • Cauliflower cheese freezes fine. But if you just break it into florets, and blanch it for a couple and minutes, you can freeze it like that to use another day.

  • My mil swears by soaking it in salted water (mmmm healthy, but then she fries in lards till, bless 'er) and freezing it.

I've never tried it as I hate cauliflower (I used to work in an old peoples home and they had it a LOT there, or seemed like it from the smell). Sorry - hope I haven't put you off!!
  • Good idea SB - have tried freezing just plain cooked cauliflower before, and it has come out ever so watery!

Break it into florets, blanch for about a minute and then freeze. It's less watery than if it's cooked all the way - and will be fine for a cauliflower cheese on the day you thaw it.

If you wanted to be *really* OS, you could make a couple of jars of [STRIKE]picalilli[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]piccalilli[/STRIKE] pica... however it's spelt!

    Hi Anniewoo,

When you reply to a post, at the top of the box you type in there are some icon thingies. The one on the extreme right is a button which looks like this

    [STRIKE]S[/STRIKE]

Select (by highlighting with your mouse) your text and then click that button. It puts the html tags STRIKE and /STRIKE either side of the text you've highlighted. It looks funny in the box as you type, but once you submit the message, the html starts to work.

  • Thanks for the replies, as I don't have much time to spare, I think I will do the blanching and freezing - can anyone just confirm, is blanching putting the veg in already boiling water?
