I'd have thought a slow cooker would be torture - all that yummy smelling casserole wafting about all day while you're fasting?! :eek:would make things much harder!0 -

Thanks everyone for all the great ideas - stupidly porridge had never crossed my mind before - mmmm a nice big bowl of creamy porridge.........
if you would like the Harira recipe...here goes
(warning: i dont measure ingrediants so am a bit general - but it is really a 'store cupboard soup' so the more you put in - the better!!)
I make a large pot to keep my family of 7 going for two days ...so i have slightly reduced the amounts!!! oh and using a mixer to chop, cuts so much off the preparation time!
cut up a handful of meat off cuts into small pieces (could be left over roast lamb but fresh meat tastier)
add to large pot with about 3 tablespoons of veg oil and about 3 onions well chopped
fry for 2 minutes then add ground black pepper (try 2 teaspoons first time but adjust to your preference), 2 teaspoons of tumeric, and 2 teaspoons of ginger powder
while frying slowly, add about a quarter of a swede (chopped quite fine) and a quarter of a green cabbage (again chopped fine)
mix well, then add about 20 'sticks' of spaghetti (broken into small inch long pieces first)
then add a tin of chickpeas drained and a handful of fresh coriander (chop in mixer for ease)
then half a tube of tomato puree and a bottle of passata (sieved tomato paste stuff - in tesco etc)
add about 2 and a half pints of water ( or enough to almost fill your saucepan) --- i warned you i was a bit general with the measurements!!
just keep in boiling for a while , then scrape the froth off the top, reduce to a simmer and keep cooking uncovered for a couple of hours.
before serving, mix about 5 - 10 tablespoons of plain flour with warm water and whisk well so as to leave no lumps.
slowly stir into the soup to thicken and leave to simmer for another 20 minutes or so ...
and thats it. a delicious and nutritious meal, serve with dates
mmmmm im off to have a bowl now!!!
Hope you all enjoy it!!0 -
sounds lovely, will definately be trying that one, thanks- prior planning prevents poor performance!

for a breakfast that will keep you going for longer try eggs - maybe scrambled eggs and toast or a nice big omlette - perhaps with some baked beans too! keeps you feeling full for ages:D0
