Employee working from home

Hi all,

Is there any tax relief / claim that can be made by employees who work from home?

For electricity & gas? If so how do you go about it and what can you claim? And for how long back can you claim?

Thanks

Sam

It's not a lot but you can claim £4 a week tax relief without any receipts: https://www.gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees/working-at-home.

What you employer agrees to pay for is totally up to them. Some will pay for a telephone line and/or broadband connection while others expect you to have them anyway.

Thanks, that was a quick reply!

My broadband is paid for. So I understand you can claim £4 per week, can this be claimed for previous years? Would it be paid to me via a cheque?

No, you don't get £4 per week, you get £4 tax relief which is 80p if you are 20% tax payer. You can go back, I think it has been reduced to 3 years. Repayments can be paid into your bank, or by cheque.

Are you classed as a home worker or is it just a case that your employer allows it.

AIU if the latter then you can't claim anything

    Thanks.

I am classed as a home worker, my head office is the other end of the country. I have worked from home for over 9 years so there may be a little bit of pocket money to claim back.

How would I go about it?

Oh and I am a higher rate tax payer if that makes a difference?
