Paying solicitor upfront for lease extension

Hi guys,
I am currently helping my mum out with a lease extension. The solicitor involved has asked for his payment in full upfront. Is this normal? When I was doing my conveyancing, I paid the solicitor a deposit and the rest on completion.

Lease extensions aren't as straight forward as conveyancing. Has the solicitor quoted a fixed fee or an on account payment.0
