What do you think of this?

It's a crock. If your off sick your off sick.

If they want you to make hours up will they disregard your sickness absence? (thought not).

Actually, they might. It would be really hard to argue a fair dismissal for sickness if no working time had been lost! If making up sickness time is possible, then there is no time off for sickness.

Considering that you only work 15 hours a week i think them allowing you to make up any unpaid time off sick and get paid for it is a pretty good option, which would mean that you wouldn't loose any money.

Also from the way you have said it was told to you it doesn't sound compulsory and there doesn't seem to be a negative consequences of you not making up the time.

Plus i wouldn't expect this to be in the staff handbook, i think its perfectly reasonable to give this to you verbally if and when you take time off sick.

As far as I know employers can only ask for a doctor's certificate after 7 days absence, not 3 days.

I know that isn't directly relevant to the OP's question, but it does make me wonder if the rest of the employer's process is as it should be.

What the employer has said doesn't sound entirely clear to me, and would recommend trying to get a full and clear explanation of their policy, preferably in writing, as sickness pay isn't a simple matter.

If no-one from your employer is willing or able to do this, it might be worth speaking to Citizens Advice Bureau (if you can get an appointment).

Of course if you don't expect to be off sick much, you might decide just to let it go.
  • I think the OP needs to clarify what the job hours are and how it was explained them.

If it was explained as 15hours per week then they are not being asked to make up any time up, just to do what they agreed. 15 hours over three days is not unreasonable, if they were sick on the Wednesday and Thursday as well then it would be unreasonable, however I will still expect them to ask for 8 hours on the Friday.

If the job was advertised for example as Mon-Fri 8am - 11am that is different as they are being asked to make up hours.

Of course each individual employer has different rules and regulations surrounding sick pay etc but the supermarket I work for do expect you to make the time back if you're off with an absence.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.
