Adoption- credit checks?

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know what financial checks adoption agencies carry out? Will they conduct a credit check etc? Not trying to hide anything but would just like to know in advance so that we are prepared.

    Hi,

I would assume it would just be similar to a landlord credit check where they just see the public information section of your file, but I could be wrong.

  • I'm not specifically aware that adoption agencies carry out credit checks, I don't think they do. There is however a detailed financial assessment in which you need to provide evidence of debts, bank statements etc to ensure you can provide for any adopted child. Both being dishonest about this and having massive debts which are difficult to manage will be blockers to adoption. Less children are being adopted these days so there is a lot more competition amongst adopters and agencies are getting increasingly picky. There is a website with a forum at adoptionuk which you will get a lot more adoption specific answers on than here.

  • They will probably ask about housing for example you own a house or rent a property. They will be likely to ask for earnings from a job and see all bank statements. In addition they will ask about credit card debts and loans. They have to know that the adopter can afford to look after the child. These days holidays are not allowed in term time. Holidays can be expensive in the school holidays. Good luck with adopting a child.

During the meeting, you will need to complete a ‘registration of interest’ form and a consent form, allowing us to carry out the following checks:
    • police checks
    • medical checks
    • financial checks
    • professional and personal references."

But they don't specify what sort of financial checks.
