We've ended up with a ridiculously generous luggage allowance (65kg for two of us) because we are taking diving equipment so I'll be okay to take pretty much everything bar the kitchen sink. I was going to take a knife, a chopping board and some other kitchen essentials.

Actually the suggestions about freezing are not redundant

For many years of having self catering in Turkey, I used to fill a cool bag with bacon and sausages, frozen, with a few freezer blocks, and it was all fine

Planes are flipping cold. Put your bag with food in as hold luggage and if it's not frozen before take off, it will be mid flight :)

The other thing I've discovered is that countries who have their own financial problems, tend to start pricing towards the euro and pound to keep the tourists spending. So you may find its really no dearer to eat out now then it was 3 months ago. Best place to look is on trip advisor. Find the forum for the resort where you are going and ask what the price is for a cooked brekkie for example or a steak dinner

A chopping board - really? You're supposed to be on holiday, not Masterchef!

Or, even better, for what local people rather than tourists eat!

    Indeed missbiggles.

We aren't rich, far from it. But when we lived in London we took advantage of cheap B&B deals or self catering to Turkey, going maybe 4 times a year.

Mid morning we would get hungry and it was a case of a sausage or bacon and egg sarnie in local bread. Mid afternoon it was a fruit and ice cream fest and most nights we would hit the local lokanta, where we would get a filling healthy meal for around £2 a head ( bottled water included)

But most people choose to work out how far their money will go by the price of a beer or steak dinner and I personally know people who decide where to go for their holidays based on the amount of Irish bars and steak houses the resort has ( brother in law is one)

    That's their choice obviously

Myself I'd rather have a few more holidays and eat and drink like a local when on a budget :)

Is this compliant with import rules?

Eta: looks like so food won't cost that much, Lidl's invaded the Canary Islands.

  • Ha if there's a Lidl there then my easy economy meals would be pasta and a ready made sauce, meat platters and bread, and a couple of their ready made meals.
