HMRC Debt

Options
Long story short, I'm self employed and haven't done a tax return for the past 2 tax years, for one reason or another...stupid, I know but mostly due to personal circumstances it fell by the wayside and is now back to bite me!

I owe around £600 in penalties and need to file asap. Problem is I don't have a record of all of my income, I work freelance, I have some recorded but not all of them...think some of it will be majotlr guess work! Don't even know where to start but want to get it sorted.

Any advice appreciated,
Thanks.

    Hi there,

I would suggest you start by trying to speak to Tax Aid, they are a confidential tax specialist and are available on 0345 120 3779. They are only open Mon - Fri 10am - 12 noon. Good luck,

  • Do you have the money for your tax/National insurance set aside? If not them you MUST start putting money aside from now to cover the bill when you get it.

If it were me I'd also log in to HMRC self assessment and get the figure for penalties & interest - that at least you may as well pay as there's no point in running up still more interest against it.

While you're in there make a start on your return - do as much as you can of it. Can you piece together your income via invoices issued and money into your business bank account (or the personal one you use for business purposes?
