Adjusting bike gears

My chain came off last weekend and jammed against something which took a little (but not much) effort to free. Since then I'm unable to get into the top level of gears. That is to say the biggest level on the front set.
Sorry that this is rather vague but I hope that it makes sense to someone.
There are likely to be plenty of YouTube videos out there to help but any advice would be welcomed.
In my defence at not being good technically, my local bike shop used to do a workshop and I enquired about it in the summer and they said that they were going to restart it 'in the autumn' and would let me know as and when they would restart.

If it was a major jam it could have bent the rear mech but it could just be gears need indexing again
Watch the following videos (you may need both after changing the front)

If it still won't go in, it might be a LBS job if you don't have the tools and knowhow to be able to physically adjust the gearsSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Check that the cage is parallel with the chain rings when looked at from above.0

Thanks for those two replies. I shall have a look later and report back. It's much appreciated.
I'm fortunate in that the local shop is a couple of minutes walk away but if I can sort it myself it'll save me a few quid and I won't lose my bike for a week or so.0 -
Well I tried but I didn't find it as easy as the guy in the video! I've therefore had to give up on doing this myself and will take it to the shop when I'm next able. Sadly, this is likely to be next Saturday so I'll probably be without the bike for a fortnight.0

I'm ok with minor stuff like this but had the chain loop on itself after coming off when changing gear and bent the front mech, had to get the bike shop to reset it and get it back in place as I didn't have tools or time to do it at work, easy enough job usually and shouldn't cost too much, any shop should do it if you can take it in during lunch or similar

My first opportunity to get there will be late opening on Thursday. There's a chance that they'll have it sorted by Saturday but I doubt it.0

If it's just the derailleur just needing tweaking and gears indexing (assuming nothing is broken) it's a 10-20 min job

Thanks. I'm hoping so too but it can be a busy little shop sometimes. They're a nice bunch though so I think that a friendly chat when I take the bike in and they'll sort me out.0 -
Unfortunately my bike needs a new front derailleur and they don't have any in stock so I'll have to wait another week. Perhaps that's why my chain has come off a couple of times recently.0

Blah I bet you could find one online for next day delivery unless it's some really rare and/or old kit
