Scottish Amicable/Prudential letter

My husband received a letter from Scottish Amicable/Prudential it says they are writing about a policy that was claimed sometime ago, it says the policy number ends in 47, they also said over the years they have lost contact with the owner of the policy and they are trying to get back in touch with them in order to send some important information about the policy we think you might own the policy.
They have asked him to fill a confirmation of details form in, especially the section that requests details of any addresses you may have lived at in the past they also want to know his insurance number.

He did have a pension policy with Scottish Amicable which he took a tax free cash lump sum in 1999 and has received a monthly pension since then and still is receiving it, it is now owned by Aviva.

Any ideas what it might be about or could it be a scam.

It wont be a scam as Prudential are a global company and are required to trace people on pensions where contact has been lost and the person is coming up to scheme retirement age or 75.

Chances are its a portion of the pension or a second pension that was not commenced when he did his open market option back in 1999. Maybe he had part protected rights/part ordinary rights and couldnt commence both at an earlier age. Maybe its a section 226 RAC with a later retirement date (which often had fixed age maturities or a reduced age range prior to 2006). Maybe its just a plan he forgot about.

Thank you very much dunstonh for your help it's much appreciated
  • I have just received a very similar letter.
I've never had a plan with Pru or Scot Am. I'm 41 yrs old so not near retirement.
I'm ex military so pensioned with the government and not with a private pension scheme.

The website on the letter does not match the Pru website address. On the letter it uses _ but Pru.co.uk uses - instead of spaces in its web addresses.

I wont be returning any details unless someone can 100% confirm this is not a scam.

What is the full version of one of the addresses? - or _ don't necessarily matter so long as it's going to the real server owned by them.

If you have doubts about the letter then contact Pru directly using their real details. There are a number of spoofing scams going. However, its difficult to know how a scam could work in this area unless it is a form of advance fee fraud or an attempt at stealing data.

Was there by any chance an AVC with the Pru?
  • I've had the letter also. I used to have an endowment policy but got rid in the 90's. I've checked the Pru website and they list the addresses they use so you can check a contact from them is genuine. This one is. The Address in the envelope is:
    65 Gresham Street
    London
    EC2V 7NQ

Probably trying to give me some money so I'll be sending it!

DO YOUR OWN ADDRESS CHECK! The above may be completely genuine and an honest attempt to help, but I would be very wary of using an address given by a new arrival on a webforum on their first posting.
