Purchased annual leave that was not taken

Last year I purchased 2 days extra annual leave from my employer. I thought that the leave would be lumped in with my statutory leave. However I have since found out that it was not and I have lost the money I paid out of my wages for this holiday, without taking it (because it expired at the end of the year).
What are my rights regarding this?. Obviously I would like a refund at best or for the annual leave to be added back to me.

That would be my guess to. The only way to get a definitive answer is to speak to your employer.0

Did you check the staff handbook before buying the holidays? It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0 -
I also agree with paddedjohn but I would ask your employer about it.0

It's unreasonable to think that purchased leave would be included with statutory leave, the whole point of statutory is that everybody gets it, so the fact that you were expecting more than other people means it must be something else. It would normally be part of your annual leave or listed as additional leave. By all means ask but don't be surprised if your employer says you should have taken it by the end of your leave year and that you have now lost it.0

Why would you purchase leave without having a specific reason for needing it?
Were you ever refused permission to take the leave due to business requirements?0 -
Surely you know how many days holiday you were due? Most people would know how many days they had taken, and if you had two left over, that was surely obvious to you?0

I have purchased 5 extra days' annual leave for the past three years. Our purchased leave is used first, before moving on to the normal leave that is allocated to us.
We can carry 5 days' leave over from one year to the next with management approval. Do you have that option? Any leave carried over has to be used by the end of June (leave year is April to March)
If we don't use it, we lose it.
What was your reason for purchasing the extra leave, and why didn't you take it? I am thinking that if you were unable to take it due to work pressures, then there may possibly be a case for asking to be allowed to take it outside of the leave "window". Otherwise, as has been said above, it would seem that you have no reason to request a refund.0 -
This will be contractual, the employer terms for that holiday will apply there will be nothing statutory(unless it takes you below min wage).0

Every company has it's own rules regarding carrying forward days. I was able to carry a maximum of 10 days forward and had the entire year to use them. My wife's company doesn't allow any leave to be carried forward.
The OP can only get an answer by speaking to HR.0
