Bracelet theft - no one cares!

I really don't know what to do next!!

A few weeks ago was at a well known NI hotel and left a bracelet (left to me by my late mum) in the safe. Yes it was my fault I took what I thought was everything out of it and left it in. So when I got home I realised I'd left it, rang them to see if handed in and thankfully it had. Was advised I could pick it up or they would be post it out. As it would be a 6 hour round trip I asked them to post it out. A few days later I received a plain white envelope with the corner ripped off and sealed in a plastic bag from the post office advising me that the envelope had been damaged!! The bracelet was gone! I couldn't believe the hotel had sent it out in a normal envelope, no piece of paper in with it to try and disguise what it was, I couldn't believe it.

I rang post office and got reference number but they advised me as person sent it incorrectly there was nothing they could do. I rang hotel and whilst they apologised and offered me a free overnight stay they have said they have dealt with the person who sent it incorrectly and that's all they can do.

What should I do next? Post office said to ring police, but can't see anything being done by them. I know I'll never get the bracelet back but I thought the hotel may have offered to reimburse me to replace the bracelet.

  • you should have offered to pay for registered post.

The hotel just fulfilled your request to ordinary post it at their expense and your risk!
  • Have you contacted your travel insurance?

If it's a 6 hour round trip to Northern Ireland I can only assume you live in the ROI so your travel insurance should cover you (if you can provide a receipt/valuation). In the absence of that it's unlikely you can do much about it.

If it was that precious I never would have suggested posting it by Royal Mail.
  • As they said to me it would be posted appropriately I unfortunately presumed it would be done so. If they had said they needed me to pay to have it sent I would have given my card details. The hotel has said their protocol was not followed and so have admitted a mistake.

I live in NI but as I have a 24/7 disabled daughter it would take 6 hours round trip to take her with me. My stay was whilst she was in respite.

Have a look at your contents insurance. Some cover valuables away from home.

What is important though is that wherever the funds come from to buy a replacement - that's all it will ever be - a replacement - with no connection to your late mum whatsoever. Better to reflect on the fact that no one can ever steal your memories of her and your love for her, and that may help you put this unfortunate loss to bed.

Incredible that the hotel sent it out in an envelope, how stupid is that.

Hard to know what to expect :/

I think you need to approach this from another angle.
What do you think happens to a paper envelope with a piece of jewelery sloshing round
It eventually bursts through in transit.
So you end up with a random piece of jewelery with no way to tag it to an address.
In the past RM would send these to the Belfast office,I have no idea if this is still the process. Contact Royal Mail customer services and ask them.
    Not the Post Office.
