I dont understand, why wouldnt they allow me to have a second job?

Duty of fidelity and good faith. You may find yourself with some explaining if your main employer takes an interest.

Obtain consent before taking on additional employment.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
  • The problem I came across with staff with second jobs was a loss of flexibility - we worked different shifts, and holidays. Can be difficult getting same holiday time in both jobs. As a student I juggled 3 jbs during the holidays, but I was always prepared to drop one if the need arose. Easier to switch about in those days somehow. Despite the 3 million unemployed when you wanted a job you asked a few people and somehow a job was there somewhere.

If it is actually £600 a month then you will pay £120 a month tax and you should pay no NI (although it is quite close to the point at which you start to pay so if you end up earning more than £600 you could pay a small amount of NI too), so your net take home will be £480 a month.
  • My son-in-law worked two jobs for a while. When at university, he managed to live on the money he made at his weekend job. When he started a full time, Monday to Friday job, he saved every penny. My daughter also saved what she could, but it was a lot less.

With the additional money saved, they managed to put down a good deposit on a house, pay all associated fees, and completely gut the house. Admittedly the kitchen and bathroom were replaced after they had moved in - the bathroom just a month before my granddaughter was born.

If you can manage a second job, even for a few months, it can make a big difference to your bank balance, but it is tiring. I think a lot depends on how much energy is exerted too - my son-in-law has a desk job during the week but his weekend job was a bit more physically demanding (catering in a works canteen). If both had been physical jobs, he probably wouldn't have managed as well as he did.

As stated earlier the 48 hour rule, but that is not the whole answer, as you can opt out from this.

Your second job could conflict commercially with your first, as said.

Your second job may impact your first. You may come to work tired, May now not be able to work weekends or late nights or shifts which the company may plan to do in the future. You may now not get in to work on time, or late and leave early. The company2 might be contacting you during company1 work time.

Also you are not totally dependant on company1, and less easy to 'manipulate', making you not have your heart and soul totally devoted to the benefit of the company. You may not go the extra mile because you have to be elsewhere, and end up doing McJob rather than providing a professional service.

Think in the UK there is an 11 hour break rule between end of work and starting work. I know this is in the case or shift work.
