shift allowance changed by my employer

I work for a large american company in the UK. Just received a letter this morning saying that a new UK Shift Policy is going to be put in place and therefore my shift allowance is going to be reduced from 27% to 15%. I have a contract of employment that was signed 17 years ago with them. Do they have the right to do that? Or can I in any way appeal against it.
Thank you
J

Yes, they have the right to do that.

Yes, you can appeal against it. But that's likely to lead to a 'fine, you don't want to accept the new shift allowance, here's your P45'.

Are you in a union? Was there a union involved in agreeing this? I don't think it would help, but I'd say it marginally improved your chances.

ok, that's what i thought. No union unfortunately, and the way they have treated people in the past, i prefer not to get into a fight with them (too old to start all over again somewhere else). Thanks Sue
