Are manufacturer's photo paper worth it?

Options
I recently bought an ip4300 canon printer and have been trying to print photos using some cheap photopaper which cost a quid for 80 sheets. The results are not very good and seeing how I am using the canon inks that came with the printer I have to suspect that perhaps I should be using canon photo paper to get the best results. is there is a big difference between using cheap pape and official canon paper? Also where would the cheapest place be to buy canon paper?( I am after 6x4" )

  • i used to do home set ups and people would never need the paper so i have about HP 10-20 sheets a4 left,.. i dont need them, pay the p&p their yours,
  • it's always best to use the right paper...I used kodak great results then got some cheap £1 stuff absolute crap...argos usually have it on offer bogof or the stationary shop or you maybe able to get it for someone online...do a search for cheap inks online and go through them all to see who sells the right paper...:D

Hi I'm not a printing expert-I'm a bit colourblind- but I just got an ip5300 which is bril. I got some glossy a4 paper from netto, 50 sheets for 3gbp 230gsm ,which has impressed me-they are also selling 6 by 4 size.I also got some cheap matt so-called photo paper from local market and it is rubbish. Netto also have refill inks at half the price of argos and the CLI-8 carts are a doddle to refill

I've got an ip4200 and have found that the best 6"x4" paper is Canon's own.

Obviously I haven't tried every single paper on the market but stuff that my Dad swears by for his HP is just rubbish in the Canon.

  • Costco sell Kirkland professional glossy inkjet photo paper 125 sheets, A4, 255 g/m about £11. I've used it for about 3 years now It's very good. hope this helps

If you're using sortware which came with printer, it's worth selecting different paper types. When I use non-Epson paper (in my Epson printer...), if I tell it I'm using glossy paper it comes out too green, but selecting matt prints ok on all the brands of paper I've tried.
  • I do loads of photo printing with a Canon Pixma 8500 and I've tried just about every type of paper! For absolute best quality (and I use only original inks) the Canon papers work best. A close second (the paper is a bit thinner but the quality is as good) is paper from www.papermilldirect.com. I've just tried heavier papers from ICI (http://www.ici-imagedata.com/) which you can buy from loads of online suppliers which are also very good - but I haven't worked out if they are any cheaper yet!

Thanks to all who replied. It seems that there are varying opinions about which paper is best but also a consensus that the cheap paper I have used so far is crap. I'll have to try experimenting I suppose. If only manufacturer's photo paper(like their inks) was not so costly........

Thanks for this thread. I have been searching for HP inkjet cartridges and also trying to find out why some photo card which was sent FOC from Inkcycle will not go through my printer. Thanks too to Spakker as I will go along to Netto and see if they do HP ink and also check on the photo paper..
