Advice about shapewear please.

Not sure if this is the right thread but hopefully someone can advise.
I've got a bit of a do coming up in a couple of weeks time and have been losing weight and now down a dress size. Went shopping for a frock but am going to have to end up buying one in my old size as I still have so much fat and flab around the middle, bum, top of thighs etc. So I'm going to have to resort to 'shapewear' to hold it all in. I usually wear jeans and tops so they tend to keep all the flabby stuff in place but a frock won't.
Never having bought this before, and looking on the M&S website, can anyone advise on the best kind to get? I'm concerned about bulges if I buy the 'long john' style, but maybe it doesn't work like that. Maybe the slip style, but would that work? And should I buy in the old size or the new one?
Can't afford to waste money buying 2 sizes or different styles hoping they'll fit. But equally I really don't want to wear a dress that shows every wobble.
Thanks for any help.

I can't advise about the style, cos I don't know , but here is something I was told at a bridal shop with my daughter in law.
With shape wear go for a size larger than you are otherwise you may still have muffin top etc.
Maybe someone else can verify or not?

You want a body shaper or corset by the sounds of it. You don't need anything to cover legs for a dress unless it's tight to the thighs. It'll keep boobs in place with a boost and suck any back fat and love handles away whilst smoothing down the tummy.
You can get them with padded cups or without. Buy to your correct size with a good firmness.

Something like that I would assume, without knowing your body shape. Hope this helps!0 -
I had a posh do in May. I bought a Marks body, the sort you wear eith your own bra. Very comfortable.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -
H&m do great shapewear shorts that stop thigh chafing and dont roll down. Not very glamorous but i tuck them under my bra for a totally seamless look.If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0

Asda sell tights that hold you in (make you sure you go for maximum strength). They are about a fiver. Obviously they aren't as good as things like Spanx but I feel slimmer in them and they smooth things out.0

I've got one of these which is fab:

The most important thing for me is that it doesn't ride up. It was the personal shopper (free service - thoroughly recommend it!) at Debenhams that recommended this one and I've worn it with a long formal dress and a short lacy number. In both cases you'd have no idea it was there.0 -
Thanks everyone, some great ideas, will go shopping in the week. I don't mind at all being uncomfortable, it's only for a couple of hours, then I can let it all hang out and wobble again!!!

Yep I've got one of those and it works a treat and actually once you are wearing it very comfortable0 -
i would bring the dress with me and try it over the shape wear.
spanxs are lovely really well designed with a good level of compression but still light. the sheer ones are great to double layer and are light even in the most humid hot day. the power spanx will drop you down a size but more than that it is slimming without digging into you. some of the designs are so nice that they don't look like shape wear at all. http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/null+Spanx+black+slip+range/Spanxblacksliprange_Black,default,pd.html
cheap imitiation from primark tend to be very warm for the same level of compression. the material is much heavier and this extra heat can cause you to feel uncomfortable rather than any other reason.
slips are better for dresses as when you sit down the knee lenght skirt tends to move to mid thigh displaying the two legs of the shorts. the shorts tend to be more difficult to use for bathroom if the dress is very tight.
slimming tights are ok but small level of an effect.
the slimming corsets are great but can restrict breathing and can be difficult to dance in. of course i did buy a smaller size- size 10 when i really needed a 12. opps.
having used every own brand- spend the money on spanx and feel comfortable. they are the best- even their tights are better than any other product. they also wash like a dream.
i have worn two slimming slips {at the same time} and it does work but it was very uncomfortable on the shoulder where the bra strap is. i would definately recommend trying it on with your bra and getting something with an adjustable strap.0 -
Have a look at Sainsburys https://tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/c/women/women-lingerie?q=%3Arelevance%3Atype%3AShapewear&text=# their stuff gets good reviews and is reasonably priced.Booo!!!0
