Buying a used TV

    Hi

A friend has offered to sell his brand new smart TV (less than two months old) for a very reasonable price.

Why is he getting rid of it after only less than 2 months if he bought brand new from Argos?
So, he's offering you a brand new Samsung smart tv, he's had for 6-8 weeks max. Seems rather strange if you ask me, I'd stay well clear.

Doesn't seem strange at all, get a new TV on finance, sell it for a few hundred, ignore the demands to repay the finance.

So they end up with a few hundred pounds, friend gets a new TV at a bargain price, argos or the lender end up with a headache and several hundred pounds down, other customers end up paying a bit more to cover such dodginess.

Not something I'd want anything to do with.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

If you dont buy it someone else will....so I would crack on if its a good price.

Its not like you have to register where the TV is and its parked out on the road waiting to be recovered.

If it goes wrong in a few months Argos will probably just replace it anyway like for like, longer than that you may have an issue but its its cheap enough in the first place I wouldnt worry.
  • Thanks for all the replies.

This is person is more like an acquaintance, not a friend actually, my bad didn't thought so many people will reply based on this. Sorry.

So I am only interested if is it safe to buy the TV, I don't care what this person does with the money as long as once I pay him and no one bothers me.

If I don't buy from him, he is going to put this on ebay.

    All I care about is:
    1) I get warranty
    2) No one bothers me is he doesn't pay up his finance obligations

Buy a new one from Currys/Argos etc etc then is your safest bet.
  • 1. Argos have no contract with you
    2. So you don't get a warranty
    3. He won't be able to claim on it on your behalf, because they'll want paying first

People frequently buy stuff in Argos for other people - e.g. Christmas presents

In that example, I would be surprised if Argos said "We're not going to repair/replace this because you got it as a gift". (If they did, I suspect people would stop doing Christmas shopping at Argos.)

So I guess they would take the same view in this case... as long as you have the original Argos receipt or proof of purchase.

Although as others say, if they refuse, there wouldn't be much you could do, as you have no contract with them.

    Edit to add...

If you want a bit more reassurance... go to an Args and say...

"If I buy a TV to give to somebody else and it breaks down during the warranty period, can that person bring it back to you for repair?"

If it were me in your position OP I wouldn't touch the TV, id rather buy a new 1 with my own money.
