That is usually how it is shared, but does not need to be. Parents will be able to share a pot of leave, and can decide to be off work at the same time and/or take it in turns to have periods of leave to look after the child.
The mother does need to be eligible, so must have been working before she had the baby.But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.
