Merkel refugee policy blamed for CDU German regional defeat

Options
Hardly a surprise. Is Merkel's position coming under threat? If so how will this influence future events.
This is humiliating for Angela Merkel - not least because this was on home turf. This election - which was seen as a significant test ahead of next year's general election - was all about her refugee policy. For a year she's insisted "Wir schaffen es" (we can do it) but German voters aren't convinced.
Alternative fuer Deutschland's anti immigrant and increasingly strident anti-Islam message has a powerful appeal to people concerned about integration and worried about domestic security.

Interesting that you don't mention that the winner of this by election, the socialist party, is massively more pro immigration than Merkel's party.

Doesn't suit the narrative I guess.

BUT, they are a sensible immigration party, not like Merkel's lot

The SPD emphasizes the integration of immigrants living in Germany and refuses any proposals aimed at restricting immigration. These immigrants must be integrated into society, for instance through the use of the German language as an instrument of integration. Therefore, parallel societies should not be allowed to develop.

More to German politics than immigration. Though Merkel's open door policy appears to have created a vote loser.
  • So many are disenchanted by Merkel's policies that the Bavarians may challenge her possible candidacy for a fourth term.

  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel's CDU party has suffered big losses in Berlin state elections, exit polls suggest.
The party is expected to be ousted from the state governing coalition with the centre-left Social Democrats.
Meanwhile the right-wing anti-migrant party Alternative for Germany (AfD) is projected to enter the state parliament for the first time.
Mrs Merkel's popularity has waned since her decision last year to allow more than a million migrants into Germany.
The CDU is projected to win around 17.5% of the vote - its worst post-war result in Berlin.

Merkel is reaping what she sewed.
