Bank account after discharge of bankruptcy

Hi,admin sorry if this is posted in wrong section, feel free to move to correct.
My question is which banks will allow you to set up a current or basic account? I was discharged from bankruptcy in 2013 and went to TSB bank about opening one of these accounts and was told if you had a account with them before bankruptcy then you could never bank with them ever again. Is this the same with other major banks if you had an account with them before bankruptcy?

  • No idea about your precise question, but if you haven't been with Nationwide before, I can recommend them.
I was declared bankrupt last month and opened a new account with Nationwide, a basic bank account, no cheque book or overdraft, but I have Phone, online and mobile banking, they knew I was an undischarged bankrupt and this presented no problem.
I had a Barclays account and they would have let me have a basic one with them now, but not online banking, whereas Nationwide did.

Barclay's apparently will give people who owed them money an account when they go bankrupt

I personally use nationwide and recommend you try them

. I wouldn't worry about the impact of searches while shopping around, the effect on your score will be minimal compared to everything else
  • Thanks guys for your help.
Went to nationwide today and opened up a basic account, hopefully they may upgrade it to a normal current account after 6 months.
  • If you recommend Nationwide to a friend and they open an account, you will both receive £100, so worth a try if anybody is interested!

Unfortunately this doesn't apply to FlexBasic. If you're upgraded, do it then! :)
