Mattress for bad back pain

Hi all

I'm looking at replacing my mattress but it's a minefield with the choice.

I have lower back.issues and hip replacements.

What types of mattress are better for support?. I have looked at a memory foam one but I'd like advice and your experiences with these mattresses and any others which you think I should be looking at .

Thankyou

What is comfortable for you won't necessarily suit other people. Are you anywhere near a bed shop? I tried out all sorts of mattresses there I never knew existed. Of course what is comfortable for a couple of minutes trial may not be perfect come morning, but you can get an idea.

Combined memory foam and pocket Spring mattresses seem to get good reviews, but memory foam can be quite warm so only consider memory foam if you are someone who likes to be cosy rather than cool in bed.

Apart from that advice, you really need to pay for a reasonable quality, £600 seems to be price point for reasonable quality pocket-sprung king size mattress. (From Harrison's).
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • I'm not worried about the cost.
A friend Said to buy a memory foam topper as my bed is a good quality pocket sprung bed.

I'll head out and go to some bed shops but as you say...10 mins testing a bed is not like sleeping all night on it . X

I suffered from chronic lower back pain and bought a Tempur memory foam mattress. All was well until after just a couple of years my back would spasm when getting out of bed. I realised that although it seemed firm enough when going to bed during the night with body heat it was dipping in the middle and causing my spine to go into an unnatural position.
I found this website which had the most comprehensive info on beds/mattresses that I had ever seen.

Took me some time to understand what I needed and in the end I did buy their top of the range pocket sprung mattress (think I paid in the region of £2000 for the bed). They explained why the 10 minute test in a shop is useless (I fully agree with that) and as they do not actually have a showroom they will take the bed back if you are not satisfied after 60 nights.
Had the bed for 4 years now and no problems. Even if you do not buy from them the website is extremely educational re. beds and they are happy to give advice by phone or e mail.

My back pain (herniated discs in a few places) is worse if lying on my back, so on really bad nights I find that lying on a pillow, as advised for pregnant women, helps.
  • Try changing positions. Like using pillow, you may feel comfortable in some other position. I prefer hard mattresses for back pain. My grand parents used to say that floor is the best place to sleep. So try sleeping in hard mattresses or just floor.

I would agree with your friend

If you have a good quality high sprung mattress already, go for a topper

I went for a feather topper which was pure bliss. My body was supported yet my joints were cushioned

I also got feather pillows at the same time. Much easier to mould into the perfect sleep position

When the topper finally broke down I got a memory foam one. Hot and took a long time to adjust to

Now I have a combined memory and sprung mattress with the cool layer. It's still a bit too warm for me so now only use a summer duvet.

I'd love to go back to a feather topper. Was like sleeping on a big marshmallow :)
