direct debits and debts

Hi Guys,
I have a slight problem! just received a standing order mandate from a debt collection agency. they say that I owe varde investment (ireland) ltd £933.83.
It turns out that varde bought a debt from a tv rental company in 2001. When I took rental of a tv and video in 2000, I set up a direct debit and paid each month. Like a fool I haven't continued to check my statements and no money has gone out since 2001, when I had my equipment changed. my account is now closed and dormant, leaving no record of my dd.
I've searched the web for a company called varde but nothing has been thrown up and the old rental company has now merged or closed. I'm struggling to get a copy of the rental agreement.
I'm at a loss as to what to do about this.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks
Maurice

hi ,you need to be more specific if possible of the date in 2001, as after six years the debt will become "statute barred", which means that it has been written off and they are no longer entitled to be paid. If you havent heard anything or made contact in the last 6 years then im guesing this varde company has bought the debt and are trying to scare you into giving them money, there are some ppl on here who have letter templates to send to them, saying that you do not acknowledge the debt etc, if youre not sure about the date in 2001 then i suggest you sit tight until next year and not make correspondance with them?
hope this helps xxLBM 29/07/ 07

Message from Dicko45,
I have an issue involving Varde Investmens (Ireland) Ltd too - do you have a web address for them, can't find one, I've found a POSTAL address in Ireland. Incidentally, T V rental co wasn't Boxclever was it? Mine was. Worth checking with your local Trading Standards if it's Statute-barred i.e. over 6 years without any contact - ask for signed copy of your contract IN WRITING from Varde.
If it was Boxclever, they seem not to know the difference between a soft part of the body and the elbow!
Read other tales involving Mackenzie Hall and MIL Collections, and keep checking for serious advice here.0 -
MOST IMPORTANT do not phone them , once they have your number its a nightmare ! Conduct by letter only .0
