Private mri

Has anyone ever felt so strongly about something that they paid to have an mri rather than just accept what you've been told by the NHS?
If yes, was it the right thing to do after all? How did you get a referral, gp or other? Does the referral cost? I obviously know the mri will cost a lot.
Was your consultant cross that you took steps beyond their advice?
Is there anywhere you would recommend for a private mri in midlands/East Midlands?
Thank you.

9 times out of 10 it's the same consultant as the NHS
It's easy to flit back to the NHS from private , again you will probably see the same consultant , unless you specifically want to see a different consultant
Cost less than you think

I've actually found a private hospital in the next county who will do the mri. £1300 on it's own and £2300 if contrast is needed. This is a phenomenal amount of money hence my careful considerations. I am waiting to hear back from my GP as to if he will refer and if he can read the results.

When I've had MRIs, the results have always been read by the radiographer, who then sends a report to the doctor, along with a copy of the images. The referring consultant, and the GP, don't interpret the results themselves, though they do tell the radiographer what their provisional diagnosis is in advance - ie what to look for, or the symptoms you are experiencing.0 -
I can recommend the Circle Treatment Centre in Nottingham, I've used both private and NHS services there and have only praise for them.

Nicki that makes way more sense thank you. I've never ever even considered anything like this so it's all very new.
Alice Walker it doesn't look like that centre does the type of mri I need but thank you for the link.0 -
Had you asked me this a few eeks ago I wouldn't have been sure. Now, having had a close friend go from stage 1 to stage 4 cancer (all the while having regular check ups and being told all was well) I would certainly pay. My friend was only examined and had bloods taken at each check up. not scanned. Had they been scanned it would have been picked up much sooner.0

I would try to refer yourself if you can, if you get the GP to do it you run the risk of wasting your money if the referral letter has prejudiced the consultant before you even walk in the door.0

Andypandyboy - nail on head. I am hugely worried about cancer and the hospital has completely dismissed me. Thankfully my GP is behind me.
Jack_pott there is no self referral for an mri that I can find. They are all referred via drs, this is a worry however my gp has sent me back to the hospital twice as he's concerned so I pray he is helpful

That seems incredibly expensive although I suppose it depends on the MRI.
"Off peak rate of £245 per MRI scan region: every day between the hours of 8am to 10.00am and after 6pm.
Peak rate of £295 per MRI scan region: every day between the hours of 10am and 6pm.
The fee for Intravenous contrast, if clinically indicated, is £125 per dose."
