If you break/lose/ have stolen item which was cheap do you shrug shoulders or worry

In the context mostly of food.

Lets say you buy something on yellow sticker or reduced and for whatever reason you have to get rid of it, or a flatmate steals it

Or lets say packaging gets damaged do you think along the lines of "oh well it only cost 50p" or do you think "on no it cost me 50p in a sale but its £4 normally"

Just thinking back over the years, like today I wasted a bottle of nice vinegar I got for 10p which is normally £4 to get rid of flies so I think if I want another even a cheap brand it will be about £2

And for flatmate things I remember one that used to steal my yellow sticker stuff like yogurt multipacks reduced from £4 to like 20p and he would either say "its only worth 20p, stop being tight" or "ok then heres 20p" and I would think "well it cost 20p to buy but a replacement is £4"

I even mentioned that to him and he would accuse me of trying to rip him off.

What sort of things do you think.

I can't bear wasting food, no matter how cheap. Therefore I have some very strange concoctions at times. Nobody can steal my food as it's only me and the dog here and the dog isn't tall enough to reach the fridge lol

I would be upset if I wasted something whatever it cost - 20p or £4. But upset in proportion to what I paid.

Not sure why reduced stuff would have to be thrown away. I think it follows the same rules as full price stuff - make sure it's OK when you buy it, then use it or freeze it while still good.

As for your thieving flatmate - he would go straight in the bin, no regrets.
  • I would have wanted the full replacement price from flatmate for what he stole. Also - I'd have been looking to replace him with a normal flatmate (ie honest).

Obviously I dislike any of my possessions of any description suffering damage/loss/etc and am annoyed at not getting my money's worth out of them for whatever reason. But I get a sight more annoyed at them being stolen or damaged (without compensation) by someone else than if I'm the one that damaged them iyswim. I've certainly found before now that I get very bothered if I think a possession of mine has been stolen - and a lot less bothered if it turns out to have been genuinely lost/damaged by myself.

Yep...I'm the person that took off my gloves to look at something in a reasonable size shop and found I'd accidentally only picked one of them back up again. When I went back to where I'd taken them off and the other glove was missing from there - then I'm the person who walked round the store prominently flaunting the other glove and obviously looking closely at other people as they went past me. I did that very slowly (as I thought my glove must have been stolen by whoever picked it up - and they hadnt realised they'd only got one of my gloves). Then walked back to where I'd taken them off - and the other one had been put back there by then....:rotfl:. Think the message had got home of "No point in stealing just one glove and if I spot you with it.......".
