I was under the wrong believe I that I should get 6 months council tax discount. The council were quick to put me right on that score. However they said that once the mortgage company has taken taken repossession of the property I would no longer be responsible for the county tax.
Now I have given the council a letter saying that the mortgage have taken responsibility of the property as under offical voluntary surrender. Since then the Council have had a letter from a company called Taylor Rose (guessing mortgage company’s solicitors) saying that because my name is still on the deeds so I am legally responsible for this council tax.
I have no phiscal access to the property however they still expect me to pay the council tax. Are they correct that I still have to pay the council tax while the mortgage company sell my property?

Yes they are correct. Interesting reading https://www.stepchange.org/debt-info/surrendering-your-property.aspxYou’ll usually still be responsible for some costs until the property is sold, including council tax and water rates. You should also keep the buildings insurance policy running until the house is sold.0

I would agree however on the volutary surrender forms from NRam and I quoteUntil we are in prossesion of your property you will remain liable for thre insurance of the buildings, utility bills and council tax.0
