Lidl Abroad

Options
Hi everyone,

We recently got back from traveling over various countries, France, Holland and Spain being the main ones. Whilst we were traveling around i noticed Lidl stores dotted around. So we decided to do our shopping there to see how it differs from the UK and found that they were selling almost exactly the same products at the same price in Euros. IE if something is £1.10 here it's €1.10. And they also had a butchers in there selling loads of very fresh meat.

I know this is a little late after the summer hols but i thought it maybe useful for people going away next year and help to keep shopping bills down abroad.

(Hope it was OK to post here if not please move it)

Hope this helps someone.

  • That's absolutely not the case in France. We live here and shop in Lidl, among other places, weekly.

Some products, especially the weekly offers, are stocked internationally. Shops in the different countries also have their own ranges selected for the customs and needs of each country.

Where ranges are stocked internationally, prices are not the same as described above. They do tend to be the same when converted from euros to sterling.

Those really interested can subscribe to the different Lidl weekly email newsletters.

  • I always use Lidl abroad if possible its as cheap as chips but I find the meat although fresh is not very good quality ( factory farmed ? ).

Find a good local butcher and smile, you get the very best .

on a related note, i don't know about Lidl, but i do know, from going into the aldi in Holland, and investigating when i got home, that the Aldi in other countries may not be the same as the one in the UK. Aldi was split a few years ago by warring brothers, into Aldi North and Aldi South. Wierdly, the UK belongs to the Aldi Sud (south) one. So if you go into the ones in Holland expecting to see the same products... you'll be disappointed.

this entry on wikipedia has more info for those who need it/are interested.

    Kethry,

Absolutely agree with you about Lidl in Holland, not at all as good as in Ireland and probably UK. I have seen one in Sardinia but in a hurry so didn't investigate

Lidl here in Spain is good. But just the same as UK, they have 12 tills and only 2 open at any time with queues from one end of the shop to the other

funny thing is... there are some things regularly sold in the dutch Lidl that i would love to have available here in the uk.. things like packs of powdered stuff and dried herbs that can be mixed with veg and rice to make the indonesian dish Nasi Goreng. its a storecupboard standby for me when we need something quickly - last time we went to the netherlands (OH is from there) we came home with about 5 boxes of the stuff.. LOL.

What i would say is that i don't think you could live off an Aldi in the netherlands, whereas you could make a very good attempt at living from an Aldi in the UK. i think thats the key difference, the Aldi in the Netherlands doesn't try to sell everything in the way that the UK one does.

  • The very first supermarket we spotted after landing in Majorca was Lidl. I thought it was brilliant, and even brought home some of their huge tins of tuna that we can't get here.

I wish we had brought back olives from Spain, Lidls were about 40p a jar as far as I can remember and far nicer than the ones we get here.

  • There was an item I saw on Moneysavingexpert Quick Grabbit and I was interested. It costs £9.99 in the Lidl in London but £16.99 in Belfast!

Two prices. Same store, both in the UK, same currency, same VAT etc. etc.

Why is one 70% more expensive?

    for the curious...

    Here is Norway's Lidl http://www.lidl.no/no/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20070917.index
I have noticed that some stuff here in Norway are the same as in the UK etc but NOT everything. Like someone said they also stock items customed to whatever country they are located in.
