car finance payment device

so had a car for 30 months of a 36 month agreement with a payment reminder device fitted . The company turned off my car with no prior warning the other day as I was 7 days late paying .
quick legal question
as this is finance and I have paid more than 2 thirds of it , can they legally turn the car off without a court order ? ( preventing me using it ) I did pay it straight away when car was turned off , but had no prior warning beeps from the device .

No preaching about making payments on time please , I was in hospital at the time .

Just interested as to whether they can legally prevent use of it without a court order so far in to the agreement

thanks

Can you explain why you think they shouldn't be able to?

    What does your paperwork say?

Because it's not your car, you stop paying they turn off the car.

It's the most ridiculous thing anyone would want to sign up to, but each to their own.
  • so if I miss a payment on say , a fridge or washing machine , they can prevent use ??????

If you were to voluntarily sign up for a hypothetical fridge or a washing machine with a remote-controlled off-switch controlled by a finance company, then yes, I dare say they would.

  • I have nothing useful to add to this thread, but I was really surprised to hear that such a mechanism existed. OP, why would you sign up to this in the first place? Was it the only way you could secure finance?

diggerman123, if you owned the vehicle the leasing company wouldn't be allowed to fit an immobiliser... as laying claim to other peoples property in lieu of payment, in this country, is against the law, subject to a court order.

Not an excuse in legal terms. Did you allow a direct debit to bounce?

I get flyers from a companny called buy as your view or something. Very high interest rates, a brighthouse type company. It says on their flyer if you take anything from them they will fit a simillar device to your new or existing TV. It's another way of securing paymennts

High interest rates and you have to put up with that... I don't know why people use them.
