Student Loan Company Threatening Decree

My DH moved and failed to pay off his Student Loan of £2k. For the past year we've been paying them £30 per month via standing order as per agreed. Last month my SO was bounced by my bank. The SLC are now threatening a degree if we do not pay in full within 5 days. The balance is now just over £1k  , needless to say we don't have that lying around!. Also the payment of £30 that was missed has been sent.
DH will try contacting them again today - but has anyone else been in this situation, as we have been faithfully paying for over a year and only missed one payment of £30 I felt they were being very heavy handed.
