Car fuel benefit and company car

I've recently started a new job with a company car (small van). I use a fuel card which pays for fuel for both personal and business use.

- How do I calculate what the impact will be on my tax taken and take home pay?

- Having looked on the gov.uk website, it's unclear whether the mileage / cost of fuel is used in the calculation at all... It appears to be a fixed amount regardless of usage. Can someone clarify?

Any help clearing this up would be much appreciated, new to this whole company car stuff.

  • You're more likely to get a useful answer if you

    A) post this in the "cutting tax" board
    B) decide if you have a company car or company van - your thread refers to car but you go onto say it's a van :o

As a general rule it will be fixed amount either way but there can be big differences between car and van benefits, particularly on the fuel side of things.

You say company car but then you say van.

There is a difference and it is treated differently for benefit purposes.

Van Benefit is £3170 and Van Fuel Benefit is £598. You'll pay tax on those at whatever your rate of tax is. That's assuming you use it for personal use outwith commuting.

If it's a car it depends on the list price, co2, fuel type etc. And personal use would include commuting for a car.
