Reporting a loan by deception

Hi
A former friend of mine managed to get approved for a loan by applying online and lying about his income. He was and still is unemployed but was approved for a 5000 pound loan. I know he has done this on at least one other occasion.
Should I report this to the police or directly to the bank?

You could report it to the bank. If he's making the repayments I doubt they'll do much.
It does strike me as a pretty spiteful thing to do.0 -
I totally agree that it's spiteful but he deserves everything he gets. He assaulted me a few weeks back and I'd like to hurt him however possible0

If he finds out that you have reported him for fraud to the bank and/or the police, he may well assault you again.
Have you reported him to the police for assault?"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
Yes, he is currently on bail. I don't think he would assault me again there were extenuating circumstances at the time as he was trying to snatch his kids from their mother. Even if he does, I say bring it on its his own life he's gonna screw up0

If you momentarily park your moral obligations, which should be motivation enough, then think about the fact that by not reporting this you might be considered an accessory to a number of counts of fraud... by your own, very public, admission herein.
If you do want to report it then I suggest you head on over to the Action Fraud website. There is no point contacting the normal police as most of them have little knowledge about this type of thing or inclination to act.
Also, I wouldn't follow Alice Walker's seemingly sensible advice (report it to the Lender) as their options are limited (as they may not be a member of CIFAS, their route to 'hurt' this chap through the CRAs is relatively limited, they aren't going to report it to the police (even though they are obliged to given my comment in the paragraph above), etc, etc)... and it may implicate you.The views expressed here are my own. I am not a Solicitor nor am I affiliated with any of the parties I mention. If you disagree with any of my comments please say in whatever way feels most natural to you. No one self improves in a bubble!0 -
Thank you this is exactly what I was looking for, I was worried that the police wouldn't be bothered with it being small scale, no direct victim etc.
I'll report it this weekend0 -
I would just let it go. You lost a fight get over it.
Do you really want to be known in your social circle as someone who contacted the police about a former friends loan application. Nobody you are friends with will ever trust you again with anything!0
