Thanks for the continued advice. It is refreshing to see such constructive conversation on a web forum.

Like I mentioned, I expressed concern about the late nights and weekends and they said they are aware and are going to do something about it. I want it to be more structured and compensated. In any regard, even if they say it's now on a rota with X amount of extra pay, I see myself there 1 year tops.

I didn't really have any bad times in my previous role (where I was for just over 4 years) and indeed at no point in my career so far has the reality been so different to what was discussed. The work is what they said and that is something I do like, but the expectation and hours are rediculous and I'm only earning a few K a year more (the move was more based on new things vs money but now it seems it is not apples and apples when it comes to work/life balance). My previous company was much larger and often roles are found for the right people; something will come up if I wanted to commit to that.

I've had a further chat with the wife and done some homework; I am going to see if they make good on their word by giving it another month. In the mean time, I'm going to get my CV up to date and see if any roles pop up.

The point about the last job is a valid one though; I agree on moving forward which is certainly what I would prefer to do.

Well I figured I would update this, just in case someone else finds themselves in the same boat looking for some advice.

Things did not improve like they said. I was referred by a former colleage for a position at another firm (I resisted going back to my old company) and I got the job.

Been there a few weeks and I love it already.

So if you find yourself in my position and you have a solid track record and you've just made a mistake....please don't just feel you have to live with it and be permanently uptight and fed up - life is too short! But, be VERY sure the new option is going to work for you!

Thanks for the update - it's good to ehar how things turn out.

As an employer, it's not off-putting to see one job only last a short while - sometimes things just aren't right - as long as there isn't lots of job hopping.

Glad you are enjoying your new work:)

I have been in the same situation as you - left a job to go to something which I thought would be good and I turned out to hate it. I left after a week - I think me moaning that I hated it maybe helped and they said I wasnt right - This was good for me because meant they had to pay me for 2 weeks despite only working one.

It was the best decision I ever made. If its not right then leave. I was unemployed for 2 weeks and managed to get a much better job and subsequently I am now in my dream role with the railway.

Take the chance if you can afford it - and hopefully if your old job is still open go back to it.
